STAY AWAY FROM THE STARS

Did anyone see the meteor shower on Monday?

Tired of the mindless soap operas, me and my family threw on our coats and scarves ("No matter the season," my sister mumbled sagely. "It's always fucking freezing in the evening.") popped in the car and drove to the highest hill that we could find within a five mile radius.

It immediately struck me how, as we drove, the sky looked completely void of anything, yet when you looked hard enough, concentrated and stopped allowing for distractions, the beauty of the sky slowly revealed itself. After a while I found it quite eerie - staring at the sky for so long without speaking does that to you. The more you stare at those tiny glimmering lights, the more you see that we're nothing, that the universe exists on a much larger scale.

Something that looks like a tiny firefly floating above your head could be a planet in a completely different solar system.

And no amount of beauty can eradicate that fear of the unknown and the enormity of existence that exists within all of us when we stop all of the noise.
